About Us
Wivenhoe Musical Theatre Group (formerly Wivenhoe Gilbert and Sullivan Society) was established in 1981 by two friends who discovered a mutual love of all things G&S and were looking for something fun to do during the long, dark winters between sailing seasons.
It was set up as an inclusive and welcoming community group, attracting new members both on stage and behind the scenes, an ethos it continues to retain today.
The Society branched out in 2004 with its first non-G&S production, Fiddler on the Roof, which also saw a move to performing in the round, rather than on the ‘old stage’. The show was a huge success and from 2007 the Society moved to performing G&S and non-G&S shows in alternating years, with the Group changing its name to the Wivenhoe Musical Theatre Group to better reflect the range of shows being performed.
COVID saw a hiatus for the group, with our planned 2020 production of Iolanthe being cancelled a week before the show, but we were delighted to finally be able to perform it in 2022.
The Group is run by a Committee, who share the responsibilites of producing a show each year, as well as co-ordinating a range of other annual events including a charity concert each autumn and an increasing range of social events across the year.
We continue to welcome new members, both on stage and behind the scenes, so if you are interested in singing, dancing, acting, directing, lighting, props, stage management or helping back stage or front of house, do
